Join the Party at California Academy – Thursday!

Grab a date or a few friends and head to San Francisco for a fun and unique event at the California Academy of Science! Every Thursday night from 6-10p, join the California Academy of Science for multi room dance floors, live music, creatures, craft projects, cocktails, shows and exhibits all together at one place. Experience the Academy with out the fuss of children with this adult only (21+) event. Each week features a live band or DJ, and a unique theme – from salsa dancing to sustainable seafood and beyond.

In honor of the 52nd anniversary of the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, explore the dark and mysterious abyss of space with a cocktail in your hand as the California Academy of Science offers Cosmic Night.

Join Astronomer George Davidson and his astronomical instruments in a rare Galileo and Frances Bacon books presentation form 6:30-9:00pm. Dance the night away in the Coral Reef & Piazza music hall with the Space Cowboys from 6:00-10:00pm. Experience the feel the rumble of the earth in the Academy’s own Earthquake show. Former Space Shuttle/ISS/Soyuz Astronaut plus Rusty Schweickart, Chairman Emeritus of the B612 Foundation, and Lunar Module Pilot, Apollo 9 will offering the Planetarium experience at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 to watch the Cosmic Collisions. See the amazing Rainforest exhibit before it closes at 7:30pm. The Academy offers more cosmic talks, living roof, eco system green house, and aquarium club room with amazing music.

INSIDER INFO: So the word on the street is this a great date night idea and good for smaller groups. Bring a jacket and show up early (6:00pm). Parking is $15 and it’s recommended to pay for parking when entering so you can avoid the line when leaving. This place has multiple bars ($10-12 for cocktails, $6-7 for beer) that only takes cash. Also the Rainforest exhibit closes first at 7:30pm so if you want to see it, see it first. Secondly the planetarium fills up fast and its first come first serve. It’s recommended that you have a plan of what you want to do and when to do it before arriving. It does get quite crowded so getting there early is a must. Road Closure: Marsh Creek Road at Regency Drive & Deer Valley Road

UPDATE 11:52pm: Cal Fire reported Road Closure for Marsh Creek Road at Regency Drive & Deer Valley Road. Fire crews are reporting that winds are picking up and fire is coming over the ridge towards the Clayton valley.

Mandatory Evacuation still in effect for residents of Oak Hill Lane, Curry Canyon Road and Curry Point have been ordered to evacuate to Clayton Community Library.

UPDATE 10:25pm: Channel 2 News reported that the blaze has grown to “over 1,000 acres and is possibly closer to 3,000 acres”. They also stated that approximately 75 homes have been evacuated and more to come throughout the night.

UPDATE 8:48pm: There is now approximately 175+ personnel fighting the fire including 25 fire engines, 6 fire crews, 4 air tankers, 3 helicopters, 4 dozers and 2 water tenders.

UPDATE 7:00pm: The blazed has reached over 800 acres on the Mt Diablo Morgan Territory area. There is over 175 fire personnel working on containing the fire. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for Oak Hill Lane, Curry Canyon and Curry Point. An evacuation center has been set up at the Clayton Community Library at 6125 Clayton Road, Clayton, California. (925) 673-0659.  

Residents of Oak Hill Lane, Curry Canyon Road and Curry Point have been ordered to evacuate to Clayton Community Library. At 6:15 p.m, the fire is at 400 acres and 10 % contained, according to Cal Fire.

Here’s the official evacuation order from the Contra Costa Sheriff:

**NEW: Please evacuate to the Clayton Community Library at 6125 Clayton Road in Clayton.***

Due to a fire hazard, an immediate evacuation has been ordered for all residents and people on Oak Hill Lane, Curry Canyon Road and the Curry Point area.

Leave now by car. Go by way of Morgan Territory Road. Take only those essential items you have ready and can carry with you. Pets must be in a carrier or on a leash. Lock your windows and doors as you leave. Stay off the phone unless you need to report a life-threatening emergency at your location. However, if you are physically unable to leave your home unassisted, call 9-1-1 for help.

Zombie Apocalypse Course – Are you prepared?

REI would like to invite you to attend the Zombie Preparedness Class, where you will learn valuable survival techniques that could save your life. These same techniques could be invaluable in any natural disaster in an urban environment. The survival of humanity may depend on you. Be prepared!

Free Sail Boat Ride Day – Explore the Bay

Come out and enjoy almost-monthly free sail boat rides with Cal Sailing Club – a non-profit, volunteer-run sailing club on the Berkeley Marina.

At this Open House get a free introductory sail and get a fun first-hand experience on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay. Open House will be held Sunday, September 8th, 2013

  • Sign up in front of the clubhouse between 1 – 4 pm.
  • Bring a strap for eyeglasses or sunglasses, and a change of clothes in case you get soaked.
