Emergency Preparedness Classes – Starting Sept 7th

The City of Concord, in conjunction with the County Office of Emergency Services, is sponsoring Emergency Preparedness classes for residents of the community.

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area.

Basic CERT Training, as established by federal standards, includes the following (presented in a 20-hour program over 6 weeks):

  • CERT Introduction
  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Fire Safety
  • Disaster Medical Operations (Triage and Treatment of Life-Threatening Injuries)
  • Disaster Medical Operations (Assessment, Treatment, and Hygiene)
  • Light Search and Rescue
  • Team Organization
  • Disaster Psychology
  • Terrorism and CERT
  • Final Exercise

Training Dates:

Saturdays – Sept 7 – 21, 2013 Concord CERT

Tuesdays – Sept 24 – October 30th, 2013 by Concord CERT

Thursdays – Sept 12 – October 17th, 2013 by Pleasant Hill CERT

Thursdays – Sept 12 – October 17th, 2013 by Lamorinda CERT

Upon completion, all participants received a backpack containing a helmet, safety goggles, tools, a blanket, a first-aid kit and flashlight. To register, click on the CERT location above. Spots fill up fast, so if your interested register asap.

29th Annual Pittsburg Seafood & Music Festival – This Weekend!

Nothing says late summer like Pittsburg’s own Seafood & Music Festival, the two-day, outdoor extravaganza that draws thousands of visitors to Pittsburg every year. The Pittsburg Seafood & Music Festival, now in its 29th year, returns to town Saturday, September 7th and Sunday, September 8 th 2013.

Guests are invited to experience beautiful Old Town Pittsburg as the Seafood Festival returns once again to Railroad Avenue. The Pittsburg Seafood Festival provides a safe and enjoyable environment for the whole family at a reasonable cost.

The festival will open it’s gates to a whole lot of family fun on Saturday September 7 th from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM and 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday September 8 th. This year’s Festival will offer over 100 Arts & Crafts vendors, over 50 Seafood and Non-Seafood vendors sure to please every taste!

The music lineup typically includes well-established artists, up-and-coming singers and local bands, and this year’s festival is no exception. The event will feature three stages with groups from around the globe, pumping out country, Cajun, zydeco, Blues, classic rock, blues, funk R&B beats and so much more. More than 20 bands are scheduled to play.

There will also be a bigger and better carnival kids play land and petting zoo….don’t miss the festivities this year. The 2013 Pittsburg Seafood Festival is sure to be full of good music, great food & lots of family fun!$8 general, $3.75 seniors and children.

Lego Build Workshops – Take Home Legos Free


Mark your calendars! If you live near a Lego Store, kids ages 6 – 14 can build & take home two FREE Lego Models in September!

On Tuesday {September 3rd} at 5:00pm, your kiddos can build a FREE Lego Pirate!

Children ages 6 to 14 are invited to come to the LEGO Store and learn how to build a cool LEGO model – then take that model home – for free! Quantities are limited and offer is good while supplies last only. One free model per child and the event is open to children ages 6 to 14. The upcoming Model event will take place in all LEGO Stores until supplies last.

The closest Lego Store is located inside Stoneridge Mall at 1444 Stoneridge Mall, Space D117A Pleasanton, Ca or find a LEGO Store near you!

Lines may form, so you may want to get there a bit early and as always… I suggest calling ahead to make sure your local store is participating.

Confirmed: DUI Checkpoint Tonight!

Law enforcement throughout Contra Costa County will be cracking down on drunk drivers Saturday. As part of the Avoid the 25, the anti-DUI task force will deploy officers countywide to arrest drunk drivers and keep the public aware of the dangers of driving while impaired.

Saturday’s DUI Checkpoint will be held on Concord Ave & Market in Concord from 9:00-3:30pm. The checkpoint will be in front of Chili’s. Check back for more information, the day of the checkpoint.

If you would like to be updated on DUI checkpoints in Contra Costa, it’s HIGHLY recommended that you joining our email list, Facebook page, twitter feed or bookmark us and check back often! We will continue to make people of Contra Costa County aware of DUI Checkpoints, Smog Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols, and other travel related events. As far as we know, DiabloReporter.com is the ONLY site that gives out specific times and locations of checkpoints in the County.

People making plans for weekend trips and parties are encouraged to use a designated sober driver to prevent arrests or accidents. Drive safe and be responsible.

Healthy Salads Cooking Class – Tomorrow

Main-course salads make great meals on hot summer days. They’re refreshing and easy to assemble but are filling enough to be a complete meal. Williams & Sonoma is offering a complimentary Technique Classes: Healthy Dinner Salads. Come and learn to prepare some delicious salads, along with vinaigrettes and dressings. They will also show you some handy knife skills.

This class will be held Sunday September 1, 2013 at 10am. The hour-long technique classes are free and include tastings of prepared dishes. The class will be held tomorrow at 10:00am and class size is limited. Participants can also enjoy 10% savings on select same-day store purchases.
