St. Patty’s Day Tipsy Tow Offers Free Ride Home

aaa-tipsy-tow

AAA’s “Tipsy Tow” initiative will be offering St. Patrick’s Day partygoers a free ride home tonight in the hope of getting people home safely on one of the biggest party nights of the year.

Anyone who has celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a little too much to drink will be able to catch a free ride with Tipsy Tow rather than risking more dangerous ways to get home.

The Tipsy Tow program is open to everyone. You do not need to be an AAA Member to take advantage of this service to the community.

AAA typically offers the service to drinking drivers from 6 p.m. on the holiday to 6 a.m. the following day in Northern California, Nevada and Utah. For specific dates and times, see the list below.

During the period Tipsy Tow is available, drivers, potential passengers, party hosts, bartenders, and restaurant managers can call 800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) for a free tow home of up to ten miles. Just tell the AAA operator, “I need a Tipsy Tow,” and a truck will be on its way.

The service will provide a one-way ride for the driver and vehicle to the driver’s home. If there are additional passengers who need a ride, they will be taken to the driver’s home as long is there is sufficient room for them to be transported safely in the tow truck. You cannot make a reservation.

AAA provides its Tipsy Tow service for the following holidays:

St. Patrick’s Day: 6:00 p.m. March 17th – 6:00 a.m. March 18th
Cinco de Mayo: 6:00 p.m. May 5th – 6:00 a.m. May 6th
Independence Day: 6:00 p.m. July 4th – 6:00 a.m. July 5th
Halloween: 6:00 p.m. October 31st – 6:00 a.m. November 1st

Whatever you do, please don’t drink and drive. Take the Pledge! Join AAA’s commitment to driving only while drug and alcohol-free.

AAA offers the following tips to stay safe and keep others safe on the roads:

  • Drive only while drug and alcohol-free
  • Plan ahead and designate a non-drinking driver before a celebration begins
  • Don’t let your friends drive impaired. Take their keys away
  • Never ride in a car with someone who is impaired
  • Plan to take a cab or stay with a friend

Help Spring 1,800 Hens to Freedom

Egg farmer phasing out of egg business, help find homes for 1,800 hens!

helphen

Animal Place is ready to spring into action and save 1,800 hens from an egg farm going out of business! They have until April 4th to find as many homes as possible. To do that they need YOUR help!

This rescue is different than others. Because of staff limitations, they can only rescue as many hens as we can place into pre-approved adoptive homes. They have three opportunities to save hens – Friday March 21st, Friday March 28th, and the last date Friday, April 4th. Over those weekends, they’ll host adoption events for approved adopters.

The hens are 8-12 mos-old red girls. Sassy, sweet, and inquisitive they are great additions to anyone’s flock!

Live in northern California? Can pick up birds from Vacaville on March 22, 23, 29, of 30th? Great!

Please note: They CANNOT adopt out of state or to southern California because of staffing limitations.

Free Admission to National Parks President’s Day Weekend

NPS

Anyone looking to explore a national park for free in 2014 should mark his or her calendar. The National Park Service has nine fee-free days on the calendar in 2014. On the dates, all 401 national parks will offer free admission, though only 133 usually charge admission, according to the National Park Service (NPS). See the list below for this years dates and plan a trip to your local park. If you’re active military or family, you can also get a FREE Annual Pass to the National Parks.

Mark your calendar for these free fee days in 2014:

  • Feb. 15-17 for Presidents Day weekend
  • April 19-20 for National Park Week’s opening weekend
  • Aug. 25 for National Park Service’s 98th birthday
  • Sept. 27 for National Public Lands Day
  • Nov. 11 for Veterans Day

While entrance, commercial tour and transportation entrance fees are waived on these days, some fees — such as those collected by third parties — will not be waived.

For anyone looking for a national park, here are a few parks to consider visiting when the fees are waived:

Yosemite Great Falls, US

Yosemite National Park: With its stunning glacier-sculpted geology, abundant wildlife and world-class recreational opportunities, Yosemite, 200 miles east of San Francisco, is one of the crown jewels of America’s national park system. Yosemite’s granite wonderland was carved by massive glaciers around three million years ago, when ice covered all but the highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada.

Giant Sequoia trees, California

Sequoia National Park: Sequoia is home to the largest tree in the world, by volume. Redwoods are taller, but giant sequoias win for sheer mass: the General Sherman’s trunk has a volume of 1,487 cubic metres and is estimated to weigh over 2,000 tonnes. Sequoia also boasts 4,421m Mount Whitney, the high point of the John Muir Trail, which runs through Sequoia on its way up to Yosemite.

Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Lassen National Park: The park is capped by 10,462-foot Lassen Peak, the world’s largest volcanic dome. Lassen’s 1915 blast makes it one of only two volcanoes to have erupted in the continental US in the 20th century (the other being Washington’s Mount Saint Helens in 1980). After the eruption, which laid waste to vast swaths of surrounding land, Lassen Volcanic national park was created to preserve the devastated areas for future observation and study. Visiting the area now, nearly 100 years later, is a dramatic lesson in the Earth’s own healing powers; it still bears vast scars of hardened lava, but between the rocks, the flora and fauna are flourishing.

“National parks not only protect and preserve the places we most value; they also add enormous economic value to nearby communities and the entire nation,” National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a news release. “…Fee-free days are a great way to both thank those visitors and introduce parks to first-timers who can find a new place to call an old favorite.”

*Fee waiver includes: entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.
